Anesthesia Associated Hyperkalemia in Greyhounds

Do you have a greyhound or greyhound patient affected by hyperkalemia under anesthesia?

The Greyhound Health Initiative is supporting a study with The University of Minnesota, investigating the genetic link between greyhounds and high potassium while under anesthesia.

With veterinarians becoming increasingly aware of this issue with greyhounds, they are monitoring greyhounds more closely while under anesthesia.  The University of Minnesota aims to answer the question, “…why do greyhounds seem predisposed to hyperkalemia compared to other canine breeds and are there underlying trigger(s) that cause hyperkalemia to develop during anesthesia?”

If your greyhound or greyhound patient has experienced hyperkalemia while under anesthesia and you would like to participate in the study, please email Dr. Caitlin Tearney.   A small blood sample is all that is needed to participate.
