Blood Transfusion in Dogs: Don’t Forget The Plasma!

    — —

Transfusion Instructions

PRBCs are used in patients with acute or chronic blood loss, hemolytic anemia, non-regenerative anemia, renal disease, and bone marrow disorders.

PRBCs preserved in an additive solution that does not require further dilution. However, if using fluids along with PRBCs ALWAYS use normal saline. Avoid calcium-containing fluids such as Lactated Ringers or hypotonic fluids such as 5% dextrose in water.

Use a standard blood administration set with a 150-170µ in-line blood filter. Give 0.25 ml/kg/hr for the first 15 min, then increase the rate. Dogs in cardiac, liver or renal failure should be given a dose of 1 ml/kg/hr. The transfusion must be completed within 4 hours to prevent the chance of bacterial growth.

  • Transfusion of 10-15 ml/kg will raise the recipient’s PCV by approximately 10% points in dogs.
  • In cats, 1 unit of PRBC’s will raise the recipient’s PCV by approximately 5% points.

THESE ARE GUIDELINES, AND SHOULD BE ADJUSTED DEPENDING ON THE REASON FOR THE TRANSFUSION, WEIGHT, AND CLINICAL STATUS OF THE PATIENT.

If you have any questions, please call us.

FFP is used to treat bleeding due to rodenticide toxicity, liver failure, DIC or heritable coagulation deficiencies (such as hemophilia A, hemophilia B, and von Willebrand’s disease).

FFP must be thawed in a 37℃ water bath inside a waterproof plastic bag. Do not thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

FFP should be administered immediately upon thawing using a standard blood administration set with a 150-170µ in-line blood filter.

The dose is 10-15 ml/kg in dogs and 6-10 ml/kg in cats.
