We’re looking for a passionate leader to serve as Treasurer on our Board of Directors! This volunteer role is all about big impact with a small time commitment—helping guide our financial health, ensuring transparency, and keeping us on track to achieve our mission. With an outside accounting firm handling the day-to-day bookkeeping, your focus will be on oversight, collaboration, and providing clear financial insight to the Board.

📝 Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the financial management of the organization at the Board level.
  • Ensure proper records are maintained and effective financial procedures are in place.
  • Monitor and report on the financial health of the organization to the Board.
  • Oversee the production of financial reports, returns, accounts, and audits.
  • Review and authorize U.S. state charity registration filings to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Coordinate with the CPA on annual 990 tax returns, providing necessary information and oversight for timely submission.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to supervise the work of our outside accounting firm, which manages day-to-day bookkeeping and reporting.
  • Provide strategic guidance to ensure financial decisions align with the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability.

⏱ Time Commitment

This is a volunteer position requiring a maximum of 5 hours per month, though in practice it is typically closer to 1 hour per month.

🤝 Collaboration

The Treasurer will not be responsible for daily bookkeeping. Instead, they will:

  • Partner with the Executive Director to oversee the external accounting company.
  • Ensure that financial reports prepared by the outside firm are accurate, timely, and compliant.
  • Act as a liaison between the Board and the accounting team, translating financial data into clear insights for decision-making.

✅ Qualifications

  • Experience in finance, accounting, or nonprofit financial oversight preferred.
  • Strong understanding of financial procedures, compliance, and reporting.
  • Ability to interpret financial data and communicate clearly to non-financial audiences.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of our organization.
  • Prior nonprofit or board experience is a plus, but not required.
