GHI Blood Bank – Now Hiring

The GHI Blood Bank is a non-profit canine blood bank looking for an enthusiastic team member interested in helping us save canine lives!   A Blood Bank Technician collects, labels and prepares blood, plasma and other components for sale. In addition, blood bank technicians consistently interact with the public, working events to educate and bring in more potential donors.  Technicians also test samples to screen potential donors and occasionally pick up on-call hours to relieve Managers for vacations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Technicians collect, label, and prepare blood, plasma, and other components for transfusions.
  • Blood bank technicians properly store blood products and maintain documentation and records.
  • Technicians work with patients, making them comfortable during the procedure and monitoring vital signs.
  • Collect, prepare, and run laboratory samples on IDEXX machines.
  • Technicians also need to be thoroughly versed in OSHA regulations.
  • Prepare invoices and blood products for shipment
  • Volunteer and work special events dedicated to recruiting canine blood donors and fundraising.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs multiple times during a donation day.
  • Availability on Sundays and/or Tuesday donation days (availability for both days preferable)
  • Available to volunteer or work special events (mainly on weekends) and fundraisers for the GHI Blood Bank.  Fundraising events are volunteer. 
  • Willing to travel to our satellite locations around Columbus.
  • Should have good technical experience.  Must have experience in canine restraint and be willing to learn blood collection.  Experience in the field required for drawing blood.
  • Ability to accomplish goals with little daily supervision.
  • Preferred experience with the similar scope of the position (examples include RVT or Veterinary Assistant).
  • Command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Good interpersonal skills online and in person. 
  • Must be organized. 
  • Basic desktop computer operating skills such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google sheets or similar software.
  • Highest level of professionalism with the ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Must be able to stay calm and adapt to potentially difficult situations.
  • Empathy & Compassion: Candidate must be able to put himself/herself in the patient’s position. Treat them the way you wish to be treated when you are seeking care for your pets.
  • Make it personal: Always refer to their pet by name whether by email or on the phone. “How is Lena doing after her blood donation?” is better than “How is your dog?”

Pay is determined by experience.  This is a feel-good job, meaning at the end of the day you will know how it feels to make a difference in canine lives.  Every successful canine donation saves up to 4 other canine lives!   Our team members make that happen!
